The President on Tuesday chaired a parliamentary group meeting, apparently aimed at lobbying for support in his proposal for an 8 percent additional tax on petroleum.

According to Dagoretti North lawmaker Simba Arati, the President had a tough time trying to convince his lawmakers to back the proposal, according to revelations by his Jubilee counterparts who were in attendance.

He said that based on the information, majority lawmakers who are opposed to the new proposal told off the president, noting that Kenyans need an exception from further taxation.

"Kule ikulu wabunge walimkataza Uhuru alipojaribu kuongea kuhusu ushuru was petroli (they told him off against introducing the new tax)," said Arati on Radio Citizen's 'Pata Shika' Wednesday night.

Uhuru is set to know the fate of his proposal on Thursday when the National Assembly will hold a special sitting to consider the proposal.

The issue has since resulted to a rift between the parliamentarians, some of whom have remained solidly opposed to it and others in support of the same.

Among the opposer's of the increment are his own Jubilee lawmakers, some of whom even snubbed the Tuesday event.

Led by Kimilili lawmaker Didmus Barasa, the rebellious side has termed its move as standing in solidarity with the overtaxed Kenyans.
