Social media is turning out to be a powerful tool for change in our societal set-up.
The story of John Onkendi, an orphan from Suneka in Kisii elicited emotions on social media when he first made an appearance in Radio Maisha.
An amateur video that circulated online portrayed the young mysterious boy as a potentially talented Kenyan thus evoking Standard Media Group's intervention.
So powerful was his loyalty to Radio Maisha, even at the tender age of 10, that he openly told off ex-presenter Alex Mwakideu for exiting from Mombasa Road station.
"I know Mwakideu, he's not in Radio Maisha. He left us but I won't follow him to Milele.
"He is a coward and when you see him, tell him that he's a coward," he said in the video.
What was even more compelling is his skills of naming virtually most of EPL superstars and their respective teams.
And touched with the message, Radio Maisha organised an interview with the young star after the clip went viral.
Within 3 hours, fans contributed close to Sh600,000 that would be used to fund the education of Onkendi, who had actually dropped out of a special school.
He said: "I thank fans for this generosity. I will now go back to school and we shall have a house."
Radio Maisha boss Tom Japanni lauded social media users adding that the platform has changed lives of many Kenyans.
