Dan Shishia Matakaya, a police constable at Nairobi's Industrial Area police station owes his disfigured face to his wife who subjected him to domestic violence that would see him change his life completely.

On that fateful day, Dan was coming from work, as usual, took supper and headed straight to bed, only to be woken up by a feeling of burning sensation.

A liquid had been poured on his face on that night in September 2013. His spouse had also connected wires to electricity and plugged it into electric socket, poured water on the floor to electrocute him.

The liquid was later identified as Sulphuric acid.

The incident dealt a major blow to Matakaya. He was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for treatment but could not recover his sight since the chemical had caused a lot of damage.

"It made me lose my sight. My face got disfigured," narrated Dan.

"After numerous counselling sessions, my spirit livened up," he added.

The officer later went to a special needs school where he learned how to live with his new condition to better his life. He has since enrolled for a degree programme in Criminology in a local university.

Dan was appearing on Hot 96 FM radio where he narrated his story to hosts Jeff Koinange and comedian Professor Hamo during a breakfast show on Thursday, January 31.

"Thank you Dan Matakaya for sharing your story on a story a day," Hot 96 tweeted after the show.

Several listeners who listened to the story empathised with Matakaya, terming him a strong person.

Matakaya who is now an ambassador against domestic violence, later disclosed that he forgave his wife after coming to terms with the condition.

He appeared on Radio Maisha on September 19, 2018 where he narrated the painful story on Starabika show.
