Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has raised fears that despite supporting President Uhuru Kenyatta to the last man in 2013 and 2017 polls, Deputy President William Ruto could be abandoned by Mt Kenya community.
Jubilee party has been in crossroads with a section of leaders from the populous region openly de-campaigning DP Ruto, a move that could have caught him by surprise.
And Mr Ngunjiri, a close confidant of Ruto, on Sunday said the current political realignment from the Mt Kenya region is an indication that 'his brothers and sisters' may abandon Dr Ruto.
"Our brothers and sisters from Mount Kenya region might abandon the DP at his hour of need.
“The questions are coming from the people, not just the leadership. The reality on the ground is that the careless public utterances and body language exhibited by a section of leaders from Mount Kenya region have made residents of Rift Valley agitated,” he said.
“It should be remembered that the number two slot in the Presidency has been jinxed, with only former President Daniel Moi having succeeded founding President Jomo Kenyatta, but in totally different circumstances,” said Mr Ngunjiri, adding that even then Mr Moi was fought by Mount Kenya leaders to the end of his 24-year term.
Lately, nominated MP Maina Kamanda has mobilised a section of area leaders behind a new movement; Mt Kenya and Diaspora Forum, whose main purpose is to counter Ruto's perceived 'Tanga Tanga' team.
The two camps have often clashed with the Forum team threatening to move across all churches in the country to denounce Ruto's team which they accuse of early campaigns.
Mr Ngunjiri in January this year accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of being part of the team that is working hard to block Ruto, adding that the move will be catastrophic for Kikiyu community in Rift Valley.
