In a Facebook post, Wanyama who was on the bench for the duration of the game, shared his devastation at the loss.

"Bad day in the office," his short post read accompanied by a team picture of Tottenham players.

Tottenham Hotspur conceded a penalty in the first thirty seconds of the game.

Mohammed Salah took the penalty, sending the ball into the back of the net.

The Spurs could not recover from Salah's goal.

Divock Origi came in as a substitute and scored the second goal, sealing the victory of the reds and giving Jurgen Klopp the first trophy of his stint as Liverpool's manager.

When the final whistle was blown, Tottenham players broke down in tears, not quite believing that their fairy tale Champions League campaign had ended with a 2-0 loss.

Kenyans had hailed the fixture as a Mashemeji Derby given that Wanyama and Origi were on opposite sides of the game.

At the end of the 90 minutes, it is Divock Origi who came out smiling.

Even amid the devastation, Wanyama will find consolation in the fact that they had reached so far.
