The 2022 succession debate continues to take shape across the political divide as politicians strategize for top seats in the much anticipated 2022 general election.
The ongoing debate is even threatening to derail development as elected leaders put much focus on the seats they will be going for in 2022.
Ukambani region has not been left out in the sucession debate as the likes of former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka strategize to contest for top seats.
Musyoka is eyeing to succeed president Uhuru Kenyatta who is serving his last term in office.
In Machakos, Governor, Governor Alfred Mutua is serving his last term in office and several politicians are said to be eyeing to succeed him.
Former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti, Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka, Mavoko MP Patrick Makau and Kathiani MP Robert Mbui are said to be eyeing Mutua's top seat.
Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama is also said to be eyeing the governor seat in the 2022 polls.
Muthama stands a higher chance of clinching the seat if he contests the gubernatorial election.
The former Senator is popular and has political influence that can easily see him win the seat.
A close ally of Kalonzo, Muthama has been pushing for better services to Machakos residents.
The former Senator has often rubbed shoulders with governor Mutua over development.
According to Kiambu based political analyst Peter Ngure, Muthama could be the best candidate to take over from Mutua.
"He (Muthama) is the people's voice, a political strategist who can push the interests of locals if he contests and wins the gubernatorial seat in the 2022 general election," he said on Saturday.
The former Senator is yet to make hint on whether he will be vying for the gubernatorial seat in 2022.
Muthama is among top Kamba politicians backing Kalonzo's 2022 presidential bid.
