The average Kenyan mind is dominated by one thing – elections. Straight after an election, talks of the next one begins. Politicians begin crisscrossing the country well in advance before elections.
One such politician is Deputy President William Ruto. He is arguably the only politician who badly wants to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta. The rest of the horses are still weighing their options.
Consequently, DP Ruto should carefully select a leader who will deputise him. There are talks that he should select from the vote-rich Mt. Kenya region. Others talk about the Western region should he be 'booted' by the aristocrats.
One of the leaders he should however not select to deputise him is Kalonzo Musyoka. And for the following reasons;
He lacks nationwide appeal
Kalonzo commands following only in the Ukambani region and some parts in the Coast region. For DP Ruto to be president, he needs a leader who has a nationwide appeal.
The ‘watermelon’ tag
In Kenyan politics, Kalonzo is known for his ‘flexibility.’ However, this is considered a weakness in politics where loyalty is demanded to the end. Ruto should not partner with him since he can leave any minute.
His alliance with Raila Odinga
If you mention one leader who is despised in Rift Valley it is Raila Odinga. In the past two general elections, Kalonzo has been with Raila Odinga as a running mate. The handshake does not help either. Should DP Ruto pick him, it won't reflect well in his backyard.
