Residents of Mwamonari location in Marani sub-county in Kisii County are pleading for help from Kenya Wildlife Services following after monkeys invaded their farms.
Speaking to Hivisasa, the residents said the monkeys have been living in the hills of Sikonge for seven years now without any action despite them reporting to government officials.
"They are many so many. They live up there in those hills for seven years now. We have reported severally but then, no one has taken any action from the government to help us chase them or remove them completely from here," said a resident only identified as Justus.
They say the monkeys invade their shambas very early in the morning and they destroy crops especially bananas, guavas, maize, sugarcane, sorghum and sweet potatoes.
"All these seven years, we have not harvested anything. They eat very early in the morning. It is a total disaster to this village because we cannot plant any more due to frustrations. Our bananas, sweet potatoes, maize which we normally depend on here for food have gone. They have cleared everything," another resident of the area identified as Margaret Moraa said.
According to the villagers, it is a famine crisis in waiting because the reproduction rate for the monkeys is quite high.
They are now appealing to the government to intervene.
"This is a hunger crisis waiting for us ahead. Already we are struggling with hunger. Let the government come and help us remove these monkeys from here," she added.
