Not mincing his words, the president warned Mr Annan against visiting Kenya to broker any peace deal between himself and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, saying the country was not in any crisis and accusing his opponent of peddling lies to the West about the country.

Uhuru's fear at the time had been that the involvement of the renowned diplomat in the country's political crisis would culminate in a shared government.

"We have said, this time around, Kofi Annan you are not welcome to Kenya. You are not welcome," the president said in front of a cheering crowd.

Uhuru had accused his adversary Raila Odinga of trying to bring mediators into the country.

His strong words came in the wake of the NASA leader's visit overseas.

Kofi Annan who helped broker a peace deal between President Kibaki and Raila died Saturday in the Swiss capital, Bern where he had been receiving medical attention.
