Mohamed noted that the use of derogatory language on elected leaders has been on the rise especially on social media platforms with the culprits being youths.

“We should be cautious about the way and manner our youths are abusing leaders on social media platforms,” he said on Sunday when contacted.

He added that social media platforms should only be used as mediums of “enlightenment, development, education and peaceful coexistence in the society.”

However, he observed that “It is unfortunate that in Kenya today, a huge number of some youths on social media platforms are using it negatively either to blackmail or cause unrest.”

Speaking on Monday in Garissa during social media in youth advocacy training forum, the youth ambassador also warned politicians against funding youths to intensify online smear campaigns against their opponents.

"As the younger generation, we have an obligation to ensure that we engage soberly in social media. I am aware that some of us are being misused and time has come for us to ignore leaders who are only after misusing us," he said.

Mohamed urged youths to use social media as a tool to spur socio-economic growth within Garissa and beyond.

He noted that the right use of social media platforms is one of the ways which youths can use to positively impact the society.

The youth ambassador also called on the national and county government to sanitise the system.
