Though President Uhuru Kenyatta is working tirelessly in ensuring that he transforms Kenya in his last tenure through the Big Four agenda, he should also think about our foreign policy.

Kenya does not have legislation on how we relate with countries like the US, Britain, Germany among others.

The aftermath is that we have our citizens going through harrowing ordeals in a foreign land.

It is tragic that almost 60 years of self-rule, Kenya does not legally know how to deal with her immediate neighbours on stolen goats, cows and fish which stray to a sister country.

A case in point is the sporadic arrests of Kenyan fishermen in Migingo Island, imprisonment without trial for some Kenyans in Tanzania while others languish in prisons in China.

In extreme cases, our brothers and sisters have lost their lives in Saudi Arabia where they flock on the promise of greener pastures.

It is high time that the Jubilee regime came up with a proper legal framework for our foreign policy.

Kenya is known to have among the best brains and human resource in Africa if not the whole world. University libraries are full of foreign policy research papers, thesis and the National Assembly is full of motions on this subject.

What is lacking is the conversion of this literature into legislation and form part of our legal regime.

While serving as the first Nyamira Senator between 2013-2017 I gathered a lot of issues in relation to Kenya's foreign policy.

Foreign policy is a subject I am well versed with given that "foreign policy and international relations” was my course paper for my undergraduate studies.

I have used the knowledge acquired to interrogate our country's foreign policy and relevant laws and found it wanting to say the least.

Comparative studies on developed, developing and third world countries show great disparities on the way matters foreign policy are handled.

Kenya does not have legislation on how we relate with countries like the US, Britain, Germany among others.

For instance, developing countries like India, China, Japan; they have legislation works formulated before pre-independence and post-independence.

These countries have very vibrant bilateral and unilateral laws which are a result of the strong foreign policy that they have.

In as much as Uhuru works towards making the country better, let him also consider safeguarding the interests of Kenyans who are living abroad by having a vibrant foreign policy.
