1. Nyamrerwa

This is the funny name given to people tasked with the role of aiding women during the process of giving birth, also known as midwives.

In ancient Luo, this is a role only entrusted with elderly women and men were not allowed anywhere near the place where the process was being carried out.

Modern midwives in our health facilities are also using the name, despite it coming to use at a time when no hospitals were in existence.

2. Onyango Otoyo

Onyango Otoyo is a morgue attendant, coroner or a person whose jobs is to preserve or handle dead bodies.

The most popular Onyango Otoyo in Luo Nyanza is Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor who happens to hail from the same region.

They are among the most feared professionals, judging by the nature of their job and the fear many people have for the dead.

Otoyo is also one of the names used to refer to a hyena.

3. Jadolo

Jadolo are preachers, but the name translates to 'people who bend or mould others'.

Other names for these people include Jakwath (shepherd) and Jayalo (preacher).
