A Form Four student has been arrested for allegedly throwing her child in a pit latrine after giving birth in Kibwezi, Makueni County.
Kibwezi assistant county commissioner Vitalis Ogur said the girl was treated at Kyumani dispensary where she had sought medication claiming that she was sick.
"The school girl visited the dispensary complaining of pains, she was given medicine to ease it," Ogur said.
He said it was discovered that the suspect had given birth and thrown her baby several hours after she left the facility.
Ogur said the baby was treated at the dispensary after it was rescued from the pit latrine.
"The area chief and community policing officers worked together to remove the baby from the toilet and took it to the hospital for treatment," he said.
He said the baby was put in an incubator and is undergoing observation.
Ogur warned young girls and women against dumping their kids after birth with an aim of letting them die.
"It's against the law for a person to throw away a baby, the long arm of the law will soon catch up with anyone found culpable," Ogur said.
The suspect has been held at Kibwezi police station awaiting to be arraigned in court.
