A section of civil society has joined opposition politicians in piling pressure on Deputy President William Ruto to resign.
Led by the the Director of Amnesty International Kenya Irungu Houghton, the activists said Ruto need to quit government over links to various corruption scandals including the recent Sh21 billion dams saga.
In an exclusive interview with NTV, Houghton said instead of the DP complaining that the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti was targeting him, he should resign to allow investigations.
"Leaders do resign, politicians don’t. If the DP feels he’s vulnerable and his principal is not protecting him then he should resign," the Amnesty International Kenya boss said, Wednesday.
Speaking during the same show, Director of Arigatou International Mustafa Yusuf Ali criticised President Uhuru Kenyatta following his Tuesday's impromptu visit to Ruto’s office saying even though it was meant to lessen political tension, it came at the expense of war on corruption.
"I am surprised that it’s actually news in Kenya when the President is meeting his deputy. Is Kenya a shithole country? If the Deputy President does not agree with the President, he should resign," said Ali, who is also the the Secretary General of the Global Network of Religions for Children (GNRC).
A section of leaders allied to Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has proposed Ruto's impeachment over graft allegations.
The DP, however, maintains he is innocent, saying the accusations were being made to scuttle his 2022 presidential bid.
