Most farmers have already received their perks while some are expecting the money to be wired into their accounts within the course of the week.

Residents believe that the much-awaited pay has also come with its fair share of challenges as new faces alleged to be sex workers throng the sugar belts to reap from gullible farmers who may fall for their antics.

The alleged 'night nurses' are said to be drawn from as far as neighbouring Tanzania and Uganda alongside locals from Kisumu, Kisii, Homa Bay and Migori have milled Awendo town, a move the locals say maybe a security threat in the area.

Awendo Cane Farmers Association Chair Argwings Otieno has warned farmers not to fall prey as the said 'visitors' are out to milk their coffers dry.

"Since last week, we have experienced an influx of neatly dressed women, some with fine Swahili accent while others only speak English, an indication that they are from neighbouring countries," he said.

He added: "I'm sounding a warning to all the farmers to be careful with their hard earned money because we have experienced instances in the past where farmers are tricked and all their money was stolen."

George Ogal, a businessman in Awendo town said the influx of newbies to the area would be an economic booster but also urged security forces to be on the alert for any unforeseen eventuality.

"This is a business booster and we have no problem with the sex workers,, all we require is proper security because we may incur a lot of damages if the situation is not contained," said Ogal.
