Former Lagdera MP Farah Maalim is among veteran politicians in Northern Kenya.
Maalim a lawyer by profession is among top Somali politicians in the country.
The former Raila Odinga’s close ally joined politics in 1993 when he won the Lagdera MP.
In 2013, Maalim unsuccessfully contested for the Garissa senator seat, losing to Yusuf Haji.
In 2017, he again unsuccessfully contested for the Garissa parliamentary seat losing to Aden Duale.
Maalim says that he is not quitting politics anytime soon.
Here are top positions Maalim once held in government.
1. National Assembly Deputy Speaker
Maalim was elected as the National Assembly Deputy Speaker in the 10th Parliament.
He was loved for his calmness and sense of wisdom.
2. Lagdera MP
He joined active politics in 1993 and elected as Lagdera MP a position he served until 2013 when he declared an interest in the Senate seat but lost.
3. ODM Party- Disciplinary committee chairperson
Before quitting the Orange Democratic Party in 2017, Maalim was the party’s disciplinary committee chairperson.
4. Wiper Party- Deputy leader
In the run up to the 2017 general election, Maalim shocked many when he ditched Raila’s party to join Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party.
Maalim is now among Kalonzo’s closest allies and is expected to advise the Wiper leader as he seeks to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
Political pundits argue that it is too early to write off Maalim politically with claims that he could bid for the Garissa senate seat in 2022.
