The county government of Garissa has laid down initiatives geared towards developing lasting peace and cohesion in the region that has been characterised by inter-clan conflicts.
Speaking from his office where he chaired a meeting involving several county officials, County Deputy Secretary Abdirashid Hussein revealed that the development of peacebuilding and conflict management policies would largely help the county with the legislative framework necessary for solving emerging issues.
He further added that time had come for grassroot communities to take up the responsibility of maintaining and promoting peace initiatives.
"It is time, our local community at the grassroots take up the bigger responsibility and burden of making and keeping the peace," the Deputy Secretary said in a statement posted by the County Government Press Unit
Garissa County has been grappling with the radicalisation of its youths, something that has been linked to the frequent Al-Shabaab attacks that have claimed hundreds of innocent souls.
This notwithstanding, the herding communities have also been fighting over water and grazing points, especially during the dry seasons.
With the development of legal peace initiatives, it is now expected that inter-clan fights and radicalisation will become things of the past.
