Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua has issued a stern warning to individuals and companies allegedly 'poisoning' River Athi.
Mutua claims that poison is being ingested in the river, killing people who depend on it for water and irrigation.
In a statement on his official Facebook Page on Friday, Governor Mutua noted that poison is being ingested into the river every day by companies and residential estates.
Mutua said despite his warnings, some companies has continued to pollute the river that serves thousands of residents.
"A few months ago, I issued an order asking all companies that pollute the waters of the Athi to stop doing that but it has come to my attention that my directive was ignored," Mutua said.
The Machakos County boss observed that pollution of the river has exposed and caused danger to residents, adding that he will no longer tolerate individuals, cartels and companies engaged in the pollution.
"The impunity by companies that pour poison into the Athi River is bolstered by corrupt NEMA and judicial officers who are bribed and facilitated to look the other way as our people die," he alleged.
Governor Mutua has since issued the last warning to companies, housing estates, and institutions that are polluting the river.
He says he will have no option but to kick out companies that will defy his latest order.
"I will personally ensure they get shut down and the life of a child or mother spared," he concluded.
