The Luo vocabulary has since been nationally adopted and is spoken throughout the nation either fluently or incorporated into other English or Swahili words.
But some words are just uttered without the speakers, on most occasions being outsiders, not knowing their real meanings.
Here are some of the most popular Luo words and their meanings.
1.Jaluo
Ja-luo is a Luo word meaning a male person from Luo-land.
Unfortunately, it has since been adopted by almost everyone and is largely used in the entire nation to blanketly refer to Luos.
Though it is right to call male Luos Jaluo, it should be noted that females are ‘Nyar-Luo’.
2. Erokamano
It is the Luo version of the word ‘thanks’ and can be made ‘Erokamano ahinya’ to mean thank you very much.
3. Donge?
This is one of the most popular Luo words used by outsiders to tease Luo people and to fake their accent. Donge is a question translating to ‘Isn’t that right?’
4. Omera
Omera originally means ‘My brother’ but is currently used to refer to any other person, assuming the ‘hey’ word.
5. Dala
Almost every person has at some point said ‘Kisumu dala’ without necessarily knowing the meaning of the word dala.
It simply means ‘home’.
6. Koro?
This is the easiest mode of greeting, mostly used in urban centers and roughly translates to ‘hi’.In Swahili it translates to ‘Sasa’ and its main motive is to know how you are at the exact time.
