As veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga and Deputy President William continue to trade fire over the prospect of a constitutional referendum and other issues of national importance, President Uhuru Kenyatta finds himself in a rather difficult position.
His intervention in the feud has to be calculated to ensure that he does not antagonise the two rivals.
While Raila used to be his adversary before the dramatic handshake, he is now a close ally.
He has chosen to be silent in this political rivalry that pits two of his allies against each other.
Here is the dilemma that he faces: By bashing Raila in defence of his deputy, he risks undermining the progress in terms of easing tensions that the handshake made possible.
Mr Odinga's goodwill remains critical to the shaping of the president's legacy without which achieving his second-term agenda will be difficult.
Over the weekend, he attempted to make an intervention, albeit a timid one, by calling on politicians to stop mindless feuding and instead focus on working for the Kenyan people.
It would not be far-fetched to think that the president had Raila and Ruto in his mind when he made that call.
Doubtless, the bad blood between Raila and Ruto will not end soon.
How he handles the two antagonists will be a litmus test of his leadership as he needs both of them so that his administration can succeed.
