Uasin Gishu county on Monday joined the rest of the world in marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Persons living with various disabilities from across the county converged at the Central Primary School in Eldoret town to commemorate the annual event and address various issues that concern their well-being.
Speaking in a live interview at the Citizen TV, a doctor at the Uasin Gishu District Hospital Godrey Makoka admitted that the county lacks adequate facilities to provide medical treatment to people with disabilities in the region.
This has forced those seeking the services to travel to Kijabe Mission Hospital.
"Medication and preventive measures for persons with disabilities are very expensive. The county currently lacks corrective measures and patients have to go to Kijabe. The government should subsidized equipment needed by persons with disabilities," said Makokha.
Global Civic Sharing project manager Samuel Kioko on his part said some parents were still looking at a disabled child as a curse among many other challenges.
"Persons with disabilities are facing so many challenges. Some parents hide their children making them miss some opportunities," noted Kioko.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities is marked annually on December 3 having been proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.
