Mboya was gunned down while leaving Chhani's Chemist along Nairobi's Government Road (now Moi Avenue) on Saturday, July 5, 1969, while heading back to his white Mercedes Benz parked a few metres away.

Obama Sr, a renowned economist, was an anti-government crusader who criticized President Jomo Kenyatta's economic policies and was unsuccessfully lusting for the National Bank Gubernatorial post.

Moments before his death, Mboya bumped into Obama Sr outside the chemist and they had a short conversation with Obama jokingly faulting how he had packed his car.

He warned that Mboya risked a penalty from the city council for reckless parking.

Mboya laughed and walked into the pharmacy only to be shot as he walked back to his car by a man identified as Nahashon Njenga.

Njenga would 16 days later be charged with murder and hanged at the Kamiti Maximum Prison.

In his bio, The Other Barrack: The Bold and Reckless Life Of President Obama's Father by Sally Jacobs, Obama Sr told a friend that he played a big role in the investigations on the murder.

He said he gave Nahshon's name and description to the police having witnessed the murder.

Obama's father was also the last prosecution witness in Njenga's hasty trial.

Njenga who had received military training in Europe admitted having been sent to eliminate the brilliant leader by a bigger force, probably within the government.

He asked "What about the big man?" after his sentencing.
