Third Way Alliance Party leader Dr John Ekuru Aukot on Thursday found it hard convincing a section of Kisumu residents to support his push for a referendum to change the Constitution.
Dr Aukot visited Kondele, JuaKali, Nyalenda and Kisumu Town, but it was in Kondele where a section of residents gave him hell of a time.
“Buy us Omena (dagga),” shouted one Rose Adhiambo with an aim of reminding Aukot that the crowd expected some money from him as he continued with his referendum politics, to which he politely replied “I do not do money politics.”
“Why did you call yourself leader of opposition yet we know that Raila Odinga is the leader of opposition in Kenya? How many Members of Parliament does your party have?” asked a man referred to as Maina Otieno.
In response, he said that even if his party does not have representation in National Assembly, Senate or County Assemblies; he remains active in push for constitutional changes for public good.
Among the proposals put forward by Aukot and his party is reduction of Members of Parliament and Senators from the current total of 416 to 147, and using each of the 47 counties as a single constituency, that will in turn abolish the 290 Constituencies.
His party’s campaign slogan is punguza mizigo (reduce burdens).
