Noor has been accorded the award by Women Advancement of Economic and Leadership Empowerment Foundation in Africa (WAELE) for her strategic role in empowering women through leadership.

The award was presented to the Ijara MP in Namibia on Saturday last week.

The award seeks to enhance the political understanding of women’s role in leadership and conflict prevention.

It also recognises and motivates all women leaders who contribute to women empowerment in terms of education and health.

Education of girls has been one of her pet causes and the award helps shine a spotlight on the cause.

It will also boost her political profile as a hard-working woman.

Sophia's award, beyond recognising her outstanding work, raises her profile to an international level as an inspiration to girls across the globe.

While celebrating the award, Noor said that it recognises not just her, but also the mothers and women who toil daily to improve the wellbeing of girls through education.

“This award is a great recognition and motivation to all those women who contribute to women’s empowerment in the education and health sectors,” she said.

“On my behalf, on behalf people of Ijara and Kenyans at large, I thank the committee for recognizing our efforts,” she said, in a statement from Namibia.

Noor made history in the August 8, 2017, general election when she won the Ijara parliamentary seat in a highly male-dominated society.

She became the first Somali woman to win a political seat in the North Eastern region.

Noor is vocal on matters education, health and women rights.
