Garissa Township MP Aden Duale has appealed to female MPs to mobilise their counterparts and turn up to vote on the two-thirds Gender Bill on Wednesday.
The Bill will be tabled in the House for voting on Wednesday after it was postponed in November last year for lacking quorum.
The gender law requires at least two-thirds of the House membership to sail through.
Speaking to the Standard, Duale said that the House top leadership has directed Majority Whip Benjamin Washiali, his deputy Cecily Mbarire and minority whip Junet Mohammed and his deputy Chris Wamalwa to mobilise MPs in ensuring the Bill is passed.
“I expect my colleagues and whips to do their work. They are under instructions from the leadership to stay and mobilize members to pass the Bill,” Duale told the Standard.
Lobbying by female MPs to have the gender Bill passed is said to be on top gear ahead of the Wednesday vote.
Last year president Uhuru Kenyatta, opposition leader Raila Odinga, and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka had pleaded with the MPs to pass the Bill.
The bill requires the support of 233 out of 349 MPs to sail through.
Women MPs under the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (Kewopa) are considering shelving their plan to travel to the United States for a conference on the status of women leaders in order to participate and vote for on the Bill on Wednesday.
However, a section of politicians among them Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and his Kimilili counterpart Didmus Barasa are opposed to the Two-thirds Bill and have vowed to vote against it on Wednesday.
