In a social media statement that has since been shared widely,  Omer faulted Somali politicians for engaging in cross-border transnational clan-based politics that interfere with the unity deals of Somali people in Ethiopia.

“We urge visionless Somali politicians in the neighborhood - particularly in Kenya and Somalia - to take their hands out and stop interfering into the politics of Somali Regional state! Yes to social and economic integration but keep your embarrassing, primitive and poisonous politics to yourself. There will be no cross-border transnational clan-based political mix-up and shenanigans. The unity of the Somalis in the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia is our singular preoccupation,” Omer stated.

Mustafa Mohammed Omer, a former human rights activist, and professional agricultural economist by profession is the new Ethiopia's Somali regional state president.

He was appointed to replace the former interim president Ahmed Abdi.
