HAKI Africa and civil society partners from Wajir County were in Wagalla on Thursday, to learn more about the infamous Wagalla massacre and relive what the victims went through in the hands of their tormentors.
From February 10-14, 1984, thousands of community members from around Wajir were rounded up by government security forces and held at the Wagalla airstrip.
They spent days there without food or water and were forced to lie down on the murram under the scorching sun.
At some point, it is said some had to drink their own urine to survive.
At the end of the terrible ordeal, approximately 1,000 people were shot dead and thousands more injured by the security forces. To date, the incident has never been followed up to hold those responsible accountable for their transgressions.
"The only thing that the government has done is to build a school in memory of the incident," said HAKI Africa Executive Director Hussein Khalid who led the team.
The Coast rights group called on the national government to address historical injustices and bring justice to the victims and survivors of the Wagalla massacre.
