There were jubilation and contentment in Pwani University and its environs as students chairman-elect, Jacob Fikirini of comrades alliance recorded a landslide victory in Pwani University Students Association(PUSA) elections held on Wednesday.
Comrades Alliance Coalition led by Fikirini garnered a total of 82 votes trouncing Dalton Nyasimbi of G7 Alliance and Kabii Martin of Tetema Alliance who in total had 44 votes.
It was the first time the university was embracing the new voting system thanks to the Universities Act 2016, which provides for the election of student leaders through an electoral college.
A total of 21 delegates were elected by students, the delegates then took to the ballot to elect new PUSA student council who will be in office for academic year 2019/2020.
Comrades Alliance Coalition that won will be led by chairperson Jacob Fikirini deputized by Mercy Mariana, Secretary general Collins Serem, Finance secretary Faraj Keneth, Academic affairs secretary Justin Sagini, Sports and entertainment Joshua Masya and Lenny Moraa who is Gender and social welfare secretary.
The newly elected team will be sworn in on Friday at 2 pm.
While thanking students for choosing him on Pwani University's official Facebook page, the PUSA chairman-elect Fikirini promised to work and deliver his 5 pillar manifesto which targets at improving students involvement platform, learning environment, the creation of Congress, PUSA connectivity and extreme economic empowerment.
"I shall lead my team to drop the thick curtains that have always been a snag in harmonizing the definition of comradeship of the 20th and now 21st century. I know something good can positively come out of us," he posted.
