The much hyped August 24 exercise seeks to capture the data of Kenyans and their number, which the government will use for future planning.

But questions have risen on what will happen to people who have since left their homes, since parents are likely to be asked the number of children they have.

And while KNBS Director General Zachary Mwangi has confirmed that the question will indeed feature, he says that only the number of present children in a house will be taken.

"Parents will be asked how many children they have, but they will also be asked where the children are. Only the ones who are within a household will have their details captured," he said as quoted by Standard on Friday.

He added that they will also work with caretakers to ensure that the data of absentee tenants are taken in residential areas, and will also take number of live births in women.

In a previous media interview, he sought to set the records striaght on those considering the census useless, basing it on the recent Huduma Namba registration.

He said that the two focus on two different things, only a day after Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i warned politicians against interfering with the census exercise.

"The census is instrumental in giving detailed information about migration patterns, disabilities and housing aspects, something Huduma Namba doesn't focus on," said Mwangi.
