Members of the Luo community are accused of pride, in a deeply rooted national stereotype.
However, as a member of the community, and one of the ones who actually feel good about themselves, I wouldn't concur with the widespread claim.
With many advertisements and publicity stunts portraying the lakeside people as those who love lavish and expensive stuff, I think we are simply confident of what we have and who we are.
For instance, there also exists a group of Luos who earn a low income, not sufficient to acquire them the Mario Barutti and Mercedes Benzes associated with Luos.
This technically rules out the pride factor as they have nothing to be proud about, but remain feeling good, and go ahead to express themselves loud and clear.
The community also brags of some very senior national and international figures, a good instance being former Potus Barrack Obama who despite being rich and the immediate former President of America cannot be declared proud.
The same applies to Oscar Award winner Lupita Nyong'o and opposition leader Raila Odinga who is ranked among one of the richest people in the nation.
The former Prime Minister and four time presidential hopeful too remains humble, despite having every reason to be proud basing on his nationwide political support base.
Therefore, Luos are not proud, they are only confident.
