Since its inception 15 years ago, Inooro FM has been a successful brand not only under the Royal Media Services (parent company) stable but also among the stations that broadcast in Kikuyu language.

According to a recent survey conducted by Geopoll for the first quarter of 2018, Inooro FM is ranked the best Kikuyu radio station in Kenya and number six overall.

It polls ahead of pioneer Kikuyu radio station, Kameme FM, which ranks at a close number seven.

Inooro FM's success can widely be attributed to among other things its team of on-air talents who are the station's face. This explains why Inooro still retains the majority of its founding presenters.

However, the relative stability and success the S.K. Macharia-owned station has enjoyed for over 15 years now, is facing its biggest challenge ever.

This follows the reports that a group of popular presenters and newscasters were contemplating dumping the station for a new startup, Iganjo FM, which is yet to be launched officially.

A well-placed source within RMS had earlier indicated to this writer that the decamping presenters are doing so because of among other reasons poor management of the radio station.

But what does this 'poor management' really entail?

Well, it is reported that majority of presenters at Inooro FM are discontented with the current Head of Radio, Edith Wanjiku.

The source within RMS who is privy to all the recent happenings that have precipitated the prevailing discontent among presenters, says that Wanjiku is the 'worst radio manager Inooro FM ever had'.

But why? Here are some of the reasons the source enumerated.

1. Attitude: The source indicates that the Inooro radio manager usually wants to be 'seen the boss in everything'.

"She micro-manages the presenters some of whom are far much experienced than her on matters radio. As a result, a form of resentment against her management style has been building up and may spill out of control soon," said the source.

2. Making unilateral decisions: Wanjiku, the source says, listens to no one save for two presenters whom 'she has made her professional advisers'. Everybody else's opinion outside the circle of three doesn't matter when it comes to decision making, adds the source.

The so-called 'professional advisers', includes one lengthy Inooro FM presenter and another one who joined the station recently.

3. She competes with her juniors: The source also intimates that Wanjiku is apparently in competition with the people she is entrusted to lead.

"Whenever a certain presenter is for example on leave, she wants to take over the show that they host despite the fact that Inooro has some backup presenters. Who does that?" the source asked.

4. Blurred vision: Finally, the source says that the Inooro FM manager has no clear vision on where she wants to steer the radio station to.

"Many presenters do not understand what her aims and goals are. They have been left wandering like a flock without a shepherd. The leadership is undoubtedly weak," the source notes.

Wanjiku could not be reached for comment.
