When Deputy President William Ruto and his longtime political nemesis, Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi started to close ranks, it sent tongues wagging over the duo’s possible political deal ahead of the 2022 elections.
However, two months later, the mood is seemingly about to change again at least going by the event on Sunday.
As the DP presided over a fundraiser in Kilifi on invitation of Kilifi North MP Owen Baya, the Governor was conspicuously absent. Instead, he sent a county official to represent him. His absence remains a mystery.
With Kingi of late playing his political game close to his chest, could his decision to give the DP’s event a wide berth be a telltale sign that he is trying to forge his political career away from Ruto? Is he about to ditch Kenya’s number two after their brief honeymoon that was seen by many as a game-changer to Coast politics going to 2022? Well, probably.
If at all that the Governor is about to gravitate away from Ruto, then the decision may throw the DP’s political game plan into a spin and he may be forced to go back to the drawing board strategizing on how to upset the status quo.
