The ongoing rivalry between Deputy President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i has caused confusions among top lieutenants of the DP from Gusii.
On Tuesday, County MP Jerusha Momanyi, who is a close ally of the two leaders, was rather neutral in the issue, asking leaders to allow investigating agencies probe the gold scandal in which Matiang'i is implicated.
"Let us avoid peddling lies and innuendos. We have Investigations being carried out. It's important that we wait for results," said Mrs Momanyi in an interview.
Dr Matiang'i has been at loggerheads with the DP. The two are said to have disagreed over police uniform tender last year. President Uhuru Kenyatta aso elevated Matiang'i further causing jittery among Ruto's supporters.
But North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko, West Mugirango MP Vincent Kemosi and Kitutu Masaba's Shadrack Mose, who has been rallying for Ruto, are said to be in a dilemma over the differences.
"Matiang'i is gaining popularity in Gusii. DP Ruto is equally influential. They fear coming out on the matter because their stand could backfire among members of the public," an aide close to one of the MPs said in confidence.
Dr Ruto has visited the region seven times since 2017. He's keen to win a projected 400,000 votes from the region in 2022.
Notably, Governor John Nyagarama, who is serving his last term, has already backed Dr Matiang'i. Senator Okong'o Mogeni is also a close ally of the minister.
Standing on the sidelines is Borabu MP Ben Momanyi, a critic of both Matiang'i and Ruto. Mr Momanyi is the senior most MP from the region and he's serving his second term on a Wiper party ticket.
