The Tuesday terror attack at DusitD2 Hotel complex at 14 Riverside in Nairobi rekindled bad memories of the 2013 attack on Westgate shopping mall and other terror attacks in the country.
It came five years after the Westgate attack that left 67 people dead and others injured.
In the Tuesday attack, security forces swiftly responded and, in the process, rescued hundreds of people from the hands of terrorists.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji is among Kenyans who were caught up in the Westgate attack on September 21, 2013.
The DPP was then working at the National Intelligence Service had gone shopping at the Westgate mall when terrorists struck.
In a media interview recently, DPP Haji recounted how he and other Kenyans hid in a washroom as they waited to be rescued.
The DPP’s brother Abdul Haji, a businessman, quickly arrived at Westgate after getting a distressed text from his brother.
Abdul Haji, a licensed firearm holder, rescued his brother and many other people.
He recounted how he received the message from his brother about the attack while he was at Yaya Centre.
“I drove speedily flouting traffic rules to rescue my brother and others who were under attack at Westgate, ” Abdul Haji recounted.
Abdul Haji’s photos during the Westgate rescue mission were shared on local and international media.
DPP Haji is now leading the war against corruption and terrorism.
He has vowed to ensure justice is served to victims of the Dusit attack.
On Friday, a magistrate court sitting in Nairobi granted investigators 30 days to detain five suspects who were arrested in connection to the attack.
The five suspects are Guleid Abdihakim, Joel Ng’ang’a Wainaina, Oliver Kanyango Muthee, Gladys Kaarti Justus, and Osman Ibrahim.
