Nairobi County Environment CeC Vesca Kangongo has explained why casual workers in the county were vaccinated.
In a post on Twitter on Wednesday, Miss Kangongo revealed that the vaccination jab was aimed at protecting the workers from contracting the Hepatitis B virus.
"Earlier today our casual workers who are tasked with the cleaning of Nairobi River and unclogging of drainage systems across the capital city were vaccinated against Hepatitis B virus. The workers will get two other doses of vaccination to prevent them from the viral disease," the CeC wrote.
Nairobi County under the leadership of Governor Mike Sonko has been involved in an ongoing effort aimed at cleaning the Nairobi River that is riddled with toxic effluents.
Among things found in the river in the ongoing cleaning exercise were dead foetuses dumped into the river.
The county said that the foetuses had been dumped into the river after being aborted in backstreet abortion clinics.
Nairobi River has long been polluted by untreated industrial effluents and garbage.
Previous efforts to rid it of toxic effluents have not yielded much.
The late former Minister John Michuki during retired President Mwai Kibaki's government made efforts to clean the river.
The casual workers have been tasked with removing the garbage and dirt from the river.
