A section of leaders allied to the opposition's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party were on Saturday heckled in Migori county.

The team was booed in Suna West sub-county while campaigning for the the party's candidate for the vacant Migori Senatorial seat Ochilo Ayacko.

This came after they reportedly attempted to drag the name of embattled area Governor Okoth Obado into the campaign.

The team led by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna urged voters to shun Ayacko's opponent Eddy Okech, who is reportedly being sponsored by the Governor.

The rejection should act as a caution to the party that an uphill task lies ahead as it seeks to defend the seat initially held by the late Ben Oluoch Okello.

With the youth having reportedly led the heckling, it is apparent that the young people who form the majority of voters in any other part of the nation could end up siding with the youthful Eddy Okech, as opposed to the veteran Ayacko.

It as well is a demonstration that ODM is facing a real challenge in the name of Obado, who until his arrest in relation to the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno came out as a party rebel.

It means that he has a strong appeal to his constituents at the grassroot level, and could end up swiping the Orange party off its feet at will, especially in the county.

And with a quarter of the county lying within the Kuria speaking area which is already heavily allied to the ruling Jubilee Party, ODM might soon completely lose hold of the region it currently considers one of its bedrocks.

Obado who was initially in support of former Rongo lawmaker Dalmas Otieno for the senatorial seat shifted his support to Okech after Otieno's nomination to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

He has since termed ODM's direct nomination of Ayacko as dictatorial and undemocratic, further daring the party disciplinary committee to punish him.

He is, however, currently remanded at the Industrial Area Prison in Nairobi pending the hearing of his bond application, at a time when his allies are said to have since joined Okech's campaign team on his behalf.
