A political analyst has said Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko could shift his political base from Nairobi to Machakos in 2022.
Peter Ngure says Sonko who has publicly said he will not be seeking a re-election as Nairobi governor in 2022 could be intending to shift to Machakos.
The governor is currently embroiled in a tug of war with Nairobi MCAs who are accusing him of conducting Nairobi county affairs at his Mua home in Machakos County.
The MCAs say that it is unconstitutional for Sonko to operate Nairobi county affairs in another county.
Ngure notes that Sonko might make a surprise move by relocating his politics to Machakos.
He observes that Sonko could shift to Machakos and even contest for the Governor seat in 2022.
“You never know what Sonko is thinking about. The fact that he says he will not be seeking a re-election is an indication that he could shift to Machakos,” Ngure said.
Ngure spoke to this writer at an exclusive interview in Nairobi on Sunday.
Ngure said the Nairobi governor is equally loved in Machakos just like Nairobi.
“He has big support base in both counties and can decide to move closer home,” he said.
On Saturday, Sonko hit out at MCAs who had asked him to relocate his county operations back to Nairobi's City Hall.
The governor said he will not be pressured by the MCAs.
In May, Sonko moved from City Hall to his Mua home, in Machakos County citing security threats.
Sonko moved to Machakos after some of his security details were allegedly withdrawn by the government.
Nairobi MCAs have now given him 14 days to relocate back to Nairobi or face an impeachment.
