Speaking to members of the press on Tuesday from the CBK's Nairobi headquarters, the soft-spoken boss said that the gold scam has been there and was being perpetrated by shady characters keen on making quick gains.

"The gold scams have been there for some time... I think today it is gold, tomorrow it is something else. The point is you still have the same characters that would rather not work and would rather go for quick solutions, quick wins whatever those wins are. The trouble as everything else, remember before you came there was the Goldenberg scam. Scammers have been around, I guess since the creation of mankind, " the CBK governor said.

Njoroge called for the strengthening of accountability mechanisms so as to "strengthen the positive elements of our economy."

The fake gold scam has gripped the country after the cover was blown on the syndicate's nefarious activities that have seen scores of people swindled of millions of shillings.

The United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Mohamed Bin Rashid al-Maktoum is among people said to have been defrauded.
