A Kisumu Court has found a number of police officers liable for the death of six-month-old baby Samantha Pendo who reportedly died after she succumbed to injuries on her body.

Police officers are said to have broken into their house at Nyalenda slums in Kisumu and clobbered her with her mother when they were dispatched to restore calm during the August 8 post elections skirmishes.

Speaking at Kisumu Law Courts, Resident Magistrate Beryl Omollo stated that the baby did not die a natural death, but was clobbered by the police quelling the riot in the city.

She ruled that 31 officers who had been dispatched to patrol the area have a case to answer, directing the Directorate of Criminal Investigation to take over and investigate them.

The group which was led by 5 top officers namely former Nyalenda OCS John Thiringi, Inspector of Police Linah Kosgei, Kisumu AP Commandant Benjamin Koima and former County Commander Titus Yoma has a case to answer.

The ruling was received well by Samantha's parents Lencer Achieng' and Joseph Abanja.

Among exhibits presented to the court by officers from the government chemistry included a teargas canister said to have been thrown into the house.

The skirmishes emerged after residents of Kisumu which is predominantly an opposition bedrock came out to protest against opposition leader Raila Odinga's loss to President Uhuru Kenyatta.
