A section of leaders from Gusii have ignited the debate of having Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i run for president, three months after his elevation to chief minister position.
President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Dr Matiang'i as head of Cabinet implementation sub committee, a move that caused jitters within government and in political class.
On Thursday, Governor John Nyagarama said Abagusii community will not hesitate to back Matiang'i for presidency should he chose to join Uhuru succession race.
"We have all seen him perform. He can transform this nation and I don't see the reason as to why we should not back him. In case he expressed such interest, I'll be among many who will support the ideal," he said.
County MP Jerusha Momanyi said Dr Matiang'i's leadership is transformative and that there is need to back him should be chose to run. She lauded his contributions towards transforming education Ministry.
"He is one of the best leaders we have around and am proud of him. He has left by example and not just rhetoric. I will join such a movement to make him our president when time comes," she said.
Should Matiang'i join presidential race, he would be the third after Simion Nyachae who finished third in 2002 and Anyona Moseti, who ran in 1992 and 1997.
So far, there were rumours that Matiang'i would join race to succeed Governor John Nyagarama but he has since reduced his trips to Nyamira since the inception of handshake.
