In 2013, Uhuru appointed Jacob Kaimenyi, a former deputy to Magoha at the University of Nairobi. He replaced him with Dr Fred Matiang'i, who would later be moved to Interior Ministry.

And in 2018, Ambassador Amina Mohammed took over from Matiang'i but was moved a year later to Youths and Gender department following the sacking of Rashid Echesa in February this year.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta today at State House Nairobi, witnessed the swearing-in of the new Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Albert Omore Magoha and the new Commissioner General of the Kenya Prisons Service Mr. Wycliffe Ogalo," State House reported.

"Commending the new Education CS for his appointment, President Kenyatta said he looks forward to working with him and other stakeholders in implementing the new curriculum and ensuring the country achieves 100% transition from primary to secondary schools," Uhuru told the new boss.

The 67-year-old surgeon is credited for transformation in the Kenya National Examination Council following crack down on cheating in exams. He also serves in the KMPDU chairman.

During vetting in parliament, Magoha assured MPs that he's ready to the task and that he can transform the sector following his nomination. MPs said they will help him deliver.

Born in Kisumu, Magoha's ancestral home is in Siaya County. He's the third minister from the county to serve in government. Raychelle Omamo of Defense and Raphael Tuju come from the county.
