Busia County Governor Sospeter Ojaamong is serving his second and final term in office.
The ODM governor is among vocal politicians allied to Raila Odinga.
As the governor serves his final term, his next political destination remains unclear.
However, with the 2022 succession politics taking shape, Ojaamong is likely to play a big role in how Busia residents will vote in the presidential election.
Busia is known as an ODM stronghold and has in the past general elections (2007, 2013 and 2017) been voting for the opposition, but there are fears the region could vote differently in 2022 election.
Ojaamong is likely to spearhead Raila’s 2022 campaigns if the former Prime Minister contests the presidency in 2022.
There have however been political fears that Ojaamong could back Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidency.
The governor and DP Ruto are said to enjoy cordial political relationships. It will not be surprising if the governor declares support for Ruto owing to ODM’s dwindling political base in the Western region.
Should Ojaamong work with Ruto in 2022 it will mean that he will play a key role in his push for Luhya votes.
Ojaamong has however not made it public on whether he plans to support DP Ruto in 2022.
The Busia governor can also opt to retire from active politics after 10 years of service to residents.
However, he is unlikely to quit owing to the fact that he is among vocal leaders in the Luhya community.
Only time will tell on Ojaamong’s next political destination after his gubernatorial term in 2022.
