Atwoli observes that the referendum is necessary to rectify some sections of the law for the benefit of Kenyans.

Speaking at St Christopher’s Catholic Church in Machakos on Sunday, Atwoli hit out at politicians opposing referendum push.

He said that politicians who have the interests of Kenyans at heart must support the 2010 constitutional review.

“It is unfortunate that some politicians are playing politics with the referendum to advance their own interests,” he said.

Atwoli observed that electoral reforms could only be addressed if some sections of the law are changed.

He added that the country’s governance structure needs to be looked at to address loopholes that have created tribalism, marginalisation and discrimination.

The COTU boss vowed to push for the referendum, noting that it will guarantee equality and fairness especially on matters of leadership and governance.

Some politicians led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga are championing for the referendum.

Raila has been quoted saying that the push is unstoppable.

The former Prime Minister also claims that a referendum was part of his unity deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta during the March 9 handshake.

Several politicians among them Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula and Garissa Township MP Aden Duale are opposing the referendum push.
