People are at a high risk of suffering from stomach ulcers if they drink alcohol in excess, smoke a lot and eat spicy foods. Drinking alcoholic beverages is one of the key factors that lead to an increase in acid levels in the stomach and therefore aggravating the key symptoms of ulcers.

Coffee is a good beverage but can trigger existing ulcers. If an individual already has ulcers it’s advisable to cut down on his intake of coffee due to caffeine and other products that are better known to increase the production of acid in the stomach. Coffee tends to increase the process of gastric emptying, which may lead to high acid contents passing into the small intestines than at the normal rate hence worsening the existing symptoms.

Eating spicy foods do not cause stomach ulcers however such foods like hot peppers can irritate the lining of the stomach. Acidic foods can also worsen the symptoms  of stomach ulcers in other individuals. Additionally, people suffering from peptic ulcer should avoid red meat. Red meat has a large amount of fat and protein and therefore takes a longer time to digest, therefore as it stays longer in the stomach the more acid is produced to digest.
