What was meant to be a normal joke by ex-US President Barack Obama at Kogelo has however, elicited sharp criticism among social media users.
At the function on Monday in Siaya, Obama, in his opening remarks, lauded the hospitality of the locals in his first visit in the region in as many years.
"I am happy with the kind of hospitality and welcome I have received. I am thrilled to meet the family and many people who claim to be my family - everybody is a cousin," he said.
Before joining guests at the podium, Obama met hundreds of his extended family members at his step-grandmother Sarah Obama's house.
But a number of Nyamira social media users scolded Obama in what they termed us 'undermining the Luo culture'.
"Nobody is claiming to be his relative or family. In fact, he should do a little research about Luo or African culture, we all live as brothers and relatives," protested Jocob Abere on Facebook.
Another user, Odabo Junior said: "In Luo land, people live as brothers and distant cousins. It is a misinterpretation to say that they claim to be your relatives."
Also dragged into the conversation was Auma Obama, who was accused of labeling Kenyans 'beggars' in her speech.
"I want to challenge Auma to tell us whether we have not been living throughout all these years without depending on his brother. She should apologise," said Dolphin Mwango at Kitutu Masaba WhatsApp forum.
Mr. Obama flew to South Africa where he is expected to deliver a keynote speech at during celebration of Nelson Mandela 100th anniversary.
