In the past, the community largely depended on "Kithitu", a dreaded curse that ensures justice is served to the complaint.

It was the last resolve after the law failed to ensure justice.

"Kithitu" wasn't administered recklessly.

One had to acquire a work permit from the government to administer the oath and curse the perpetrator who had wronged him/her.

People who administered the oath had either had their livestock stolen, kins killed or property destroyed.

Before resolving to it, one had to urge the perpetrators to come forward or face the music.

Failure to which, one would go ahead to perform the oath.

One was advised to choose his or her words carefully when administering the oath since it could wipe out a whole family.

Most people feared this kind of justice and would rather confess than watch the curse befall their family members.

Surprisingly, the partakers were to abstain from sex for the oath to be effective after the oath had been administered.

The tradition is, however, still practiced in some parts of Ukambani region.
