President Uhuru Kenyatta dismissed rumours that his association with opposition leader Raila Odinga is about politics.
Speaking on Wednesday, Uhuru called on leaders stop politicizing relationship, which he termed as a deeper understanding.
He noted that his handshake was all meant to help unite the country.
"I have heard in the media of rumours about the formation of a political party. But do not misinterpret our understanding with politics. We should not allow politics to shed the blood of our people. We need to come together and have a common purpose," said Uhuru.
The head of state was speaking at the Holy Family Basilica during the memorial service of founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
"There comes a time when we should let go of petty politics. There is much deeper understanding between myself and my brother Raila Odinga," Uhuru said
On his party, Raila heaped praise on Mzee Jomo Kenyatta for taking the role of fighting colonialism.
"Jomo Kenyatta sacrificed for our country. That is why we want to achieve as a people. That is the meaning of our handshake so that we can cross River Jordan and enter Canaan," Raila said.
The event was also attended by Deputy President William Ruto, Mama Ngina Kenyatta, Cabinet secretaries, governors Ferdinand Waititu and Mike Sonko.
