Two sub-chiefs are among 11 passengers confirmed dead following a grisly road accident along the Eldoret-Kaptagat-Eldama-Ravine road.
The accident happened at HZ area in Metkei on Monday night.
It has been reported that the accident that happened at around 9.00 pm when a 14-seater matatu that was from Eldoret town lost control and rolled several times.
7 passengers died on the spot while 4 others died as they were being taken to hospital for treatment.
Confirming the incident, Metkei Assistant County Commissioner Raymond Jembe said the injured were taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town.
"The incident happened at around 9 pm after the driver of a 14-seater matatu lost control of his vehicle at this sharp corner claiming seven lives on the spot and four others died on their way to the MTRH,” Jembe was quoted by Daily Nation
Bodies of the dead have been kept at MTRH's mortuary.
According to Alex Barsulai, an eye-witness, the 14 seater driver might not have been familiar to the corner causing him to lose control.
"The place is sharp and steep and the driver seemed not to be aware hence he lost control of the vehicle before it rolled severally hitting a guard rail. It is not the first time an accident has occurred here. Four people died on the spot at this scene in 2014," he said.
MTRH medical supernatant Polycarp Otara said 3 survivors are in stable condition at the hospital.
