The Nairobi-bound plane had just flown 20 minutes before it made a U-turn in the air after the system raised an alarm.

The plane had departed from Moi International Airport, Mombasa at 1754 hours (5:54pm) before the incident occurred.

In a statement, Kenya Airways confirmed the incident, adding that that there was a fault in the aircraft's warning system, that raised a false mechanical alarm, forcing the captain to take precautionary safety measures.

"Flight KQ609 departed Mombasa at 1754 hours and was airborne at 1807 hours. Flight landed back in Mombasa at 1834 hours and parked at 1839 hours. The flight had 95 passengers and five crew members. After assessment, engineers declared the aircraft grounded. Some passengers were accommodated on subsequent flights KQ617 and KQ619.

"Other passengers with connections beyond Nairobi have been given accommodation in Mombasa to travel tomorrow to their final destinations," Kenya Airways said in a statement.
