Ford Kenya Secretary-General Dr Eseli Simiyu has refused to be drawn into the fake gold saga in which his party leader Moses Wetang'ula has been implicated.
In a political show aired by NTV on Tuesday morning, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruyoit pressed Simiyu hard to comment on the Sh400 million scandal, but he could not be moved.
"If you are a spokesman of Ford Kenya and your party members want to know about the party leader, don’t you owe it to them to tell them what is going on?" Cheruyoit asked.
In his response, Simiyu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Tongaren, said he was not Wetang'ula's spokesperson and asked people to wait for his personal statement.
"I’m the spokesman for Ford Kenya, the party, not the party leader. I’ll leave it to the party leader to give his statement. In the age of Cambridge Analytica, anything can happen on social media," he said.
Wetang'ula has been linked to the saga, in which the United Arab Emirates (UAE) royal family was swindled Sh400 million. This is after a leaked phone conversation emerged online where a man sounding like the Senator promises Dubai-based gold dealer to help in securing the release of a gold consignment purportedly held by authorities at JKIA.
Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti, who has vowed to nail each and every criminal in the scam, has named the Bungoma Senator as a person of interest.
“He is a person of interest and we shall be interrogating him and all others mentioned to determine their degree of involvement,” said Kinoti as quoted by Business Daily.
Wetang'ula is currently in China for official duties and is expected to return by the end of the week.
